Mountain Bike Racing Dangers

Mountain Bike Racing Dangers can appear from the most unexpected places. Most of us are well aware of the usual Mountain Bike Racing Dangers that we normally face. Extremely steep declines and inclines, sharp rocks, boulders, rivers, loose gravel, branches, ATVs and even exuberant dogs.

Probably none of us have had or are likely to have, Evan van der Spuy's experience of being literally run over by a Red Hartebeest. This occurred while he was Mountain Bike racing in South Africa in KwaZulu-Natal Province. Van der Spuy was actually in second place when this unbelievable incident happened.

The animal ran straight into the cyclist. The Hartbeest's head collided with Van der Spuy's knocking him down, out of the race and breaking his helmet. Given the force and severity of the collision he was fortunate not to have been severly injured.
