Megavalanche

Megavalanche or Mega Alpe d'Huez. Most of us are probably familiar with the Alpe d'Huez from watching the Tour de France. It has been a stage finish for most of the Tours with a few exceptions. The Alpe d'Huez is also a very popular European ski resort, but perhaps you are not familiar with the Megavalanche Alpe d'Huez mountain bike race also known as the Mega.

The Mega is a is a downhill mountain bike event that starts at 3,300m on the glacier of Pic Blanc. The finishing line is 30km away at Allemont ( 720m ). The course is not all downhill, there are sections where riders have to pedal uphill and of course this is at altitude. There are also sections near the bottom where there are switchbacks on the singletrack. Anyone who is afraid of heights could find this part quite frightening as the singletrack is exposed to the drop off in certain sections.
